Love it! Thanks, Joy, for being such a great advocate for all of us–fat, thin, and everywhere in between.

  2. 2 Karin October 11, 2007 at 6:47 pm

BRILLIANT! I love it and laughed my ass off! You and your team did an awesome job. πŸ™‚

  3. 3 Kelly Cox Semple October 11, 2007 at 6:51 pm

Fantastic! FR1 was great (will you make enough of them to give them abbreviated, enumerated names?), and the new one is equally great. No sophomore slump for you! Thank you, thank you, thank you for addressing this in such a humorous and highly effective manner. Keep on keepin’ on. πŸ™‚

  4. 5 drstaceyny October 11, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Hi, Joy–love it. Hilarious. . . and still making a significant point. You rock!

  5. 6 Rachel October 11, 2007 at 7:54 pm

*spontaneous round of applause* That was fantastic!
I came across the original Fat Rant months ago…. didn’t realise you had a blog too – but I’ll be reading now I’ve found it πŸ™‚

  6. 7 fillyjonk October 11, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Honestly, what do you think we think?

We think you are the CHAMPION OF THE GODDAMN UNIVERSE, that’s what.

  7. 8 bloomie October 11, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Love it! And love your outfit. Where’d you get the yellow leggings? And the pretty dress at the end. And the gold pants the lady who washes her hands a million times a day wears?

  8. 9 Alexa October 11, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    More Fat Rant–

I was actually thinking about this today. I was thinking about all of the movies I’ve seen that portray a fat girl, and all they show her doing is stuffing her face. I’m fat and you know something? I eat, but I don’t eat every minute of every day. I go to school, I go to work, I do my homework, I clean my house, I go out with my friends to blow what little money I make at my job on clothes, I work out, I take naps…I don’t eat all the time. Thank you for making it public that we don’t just gorge ourselves 24/7. Cause like you said, “I’ve got living to do, baby!”

  9. 10 Lisa October 11, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Oh, Joy – you ROCK!! And you look FAB in that blue dress you’re wearing at the end πŸ™‚

  10. 11 Joy Nash October 11, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Ahhh!!! You guys are so amazing:) Thank you so much for your response..
    for the pertinent quetions:
    yellow leggings: Target
blue dress: INC at Macy’s .. they’ve got a shiny maroon one in now…
gold pants: Ross Dress for Less for $2!! No joke.

for reals.. i’m so so so glad you like it πŸ™‚

  11. 12 Marshmallow October 11, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay! I LOVED this, it was absolutely hilarious – and like the others, I thought you looked damn hot in that blue dress at the end πŸ˜€

You rock my world and stuff πŸ˜€

  12. 13 Stacy Bias October 11, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Joy! Aw, sweet girl. Bra-freakin-‘vo! It’s hilarious, warm, fiercely intelligent, loving, insightful and brilliantly executed. Well done, my talented friend. Well. Done!

Standing ovation here. πŸ™‚ Poignant and beautifully done.

  14. 15 Kell Brigan October 11, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Everybody was on their game for this one. Every kind of excellent applies here. If only “pro” video was half this good.

  15. 16 JeanC October 11, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Another standing ovation from North Idaho! Your newest vid is BRILLIANT!!!!!

  16. 17 Mary Ray Worley October 11, 2007 at 11:02 pm

Totally awesome! Keep ’em coming! The video rocks, the skit rocks, the costumes and the acting rock. I hope this gets as much circulation as the first one did, or more! Well done!

  17. 18 Di October 11, 2007 at 11:21 pm

What a breakthrough! Hilarious, and dead on.

Now, could you do that to that Meme chick you had to deal with awhile back?

  18. 19 racheypete October 11, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Sweet. I just discovered fat rant, what… Yesterday? and now another! The costumes, the acting the production value…top notch!

  19. 20 Vicky H October 12, 2007 at 1:38 am

I officially love you even more – in addition to the love I have for you for the first Fat Rant. Big girls need more aspiring people like yourself to learn to gain confidence and love themselves for who they are.
Thank you for the great sequel~!

  20. 21 Meowser October 12, 2007 at 2:38 am

We need you in this world SO BAD. I hope you know that.

You totally rock!!!!! You’re so smart, gorgeous and fat!!! Me too πŸ™‚

  22. 23 Laura October 12, 2007 at 4:57 am

    Joy Nash —

I must say… If I could subscribe to a station that was all you all the time I would do it in a heartbeat. You have such a vibrant and inspiring presence on screen! I loved this video, your characters are hilarious and your message came through perfectly. Thanks for sharing your message so powerfully.

    — Laura πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  23. 24 Krista October 12, 2007 at 5:23 am

Thank you so much for this answer to the “You just don’t have the willpower to control your eating” crowd. FR1 was the first time I started critically thinking about the negative messages I am always getting from myself and others. FR2 just reinforces the fact that I need to concentrate on living my life, not apologizing because I am fat. And, your clothes so totally rock!!!

  24. 25 Jon B. October 12, 2007 at 6:28 am

You know what I have to say about it. ^_^
I haven’t tried video reply round 2, however. I might have to skip it this time, and stick to typing.

  25. 26 Jackie October 12, 2007 at 2:39 pm

I really loved Danica. She was so me in high school, especially the eye-rolling! I didn’t pull my hair though, but it’s funny cause I was such a Goth, lol.

You make a very good point about these obession issues. What I really liked was you pointed out that fat people eat just the same as thin people, OMG! :O Such a revelation! Yeah, well maybe it’s that way for some people.

  26. 27 Ashley October 12, 2007 at 5:43 pm

I love what you are trying to do with these videos and I hope I don’t come off as attacking, but I’m just curious about the obesity in America versus other countries. We are the fattest country. Other parts of the world are not only significantly thinner, but in better shape and living a lot longer…why do you think that is? I mean, there has to be something we aren’t doing right here.

  27. 28 Sarah October 12, 2007 at 6:56 pm

Ashley, the life expectancy for Americans has sky rocked for the past several years – we just hit a record high at 77.6 years.

And have you checked your stats about Europe? They too have an increase in the number of “obese” individuals. Urban centers in Africa have an increase in “obese” women too.

But is that necessarily a bad thing in your eyes, or is the “obesity crisis” just being inflated by bad statistics and fat-phobic individuals? Being overweight or “obese” doesn’t automatically make your unhealthy – the American life expectancy speaks to that fact.

What we are not doing “right” is subjective.

  28. 29 Ashley October 12, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Sarah, what are your sources for that information out of curiosity? Did they say what the cause was of the higher life expectancy?

There may have been an increase in obesity over the past few years in some other countries, but why have we had a significantly larger problem with it for the prolonged period of time that we have?

Are you saying that the obesity crisis is just made up? If not, what are you saying? What exactly is a “bad statistic” and a “good statistic” to you? Isn’t that also subjective? I’m not saying that every overweight person is unhealthy, but you can’t be suggesting that in general that being obese is a “good” thing. You can’t deny that many America are overweight due to overeating. I know plenty of individuals personally who are in fact obese due to unhealthy eating habits, and they suffer from a list of health problems simple because of that.

  29. 30 Ashley October 12, 2007 at 8:51 pm

///Side note: I just want to say before people start getting offended by what I say and the questions I’m asking is that I’m not some anti-fat activist or fat-phobe. I’m genuinely concerned and curious about certain areas brought up in this circle of fat acceptance websites. All I want is a mature, adult discussion and a better understanding, which I hope that Joy will allow. I would never call anyone names, purposely insult or attack anyone, or be disrespectful. In other blogs I’ve commented in recently, I didn’t get a chance to make that understood before I was banned because they didn’t like the questions I brought up. But here’s hoping that Joy and her readers are better than that.

  30. 31 Dame Wendy October 13, 2007 at 4:23 am

Beautifully done! Really, awesome job gal.

  31. 32 Maya's Granny October 13, 2007 at 11:18 am

    Joy,

You are my hero. I love what you do. I love your verve and energy and intelligence and beauty and wit and sass.

  32. 33 Maya's Granny October 13, 2007 at 12:19 pm

    Joy,
I am going to post your new rant on Sunday.

  33. 34 Susan October 13, 2007 at 3:08 pm

    Hi Joy,

You’re smart, attractive, a talented writer/actor AND you’re FAT! Basically, you’re the perfect woman!
I want to take you out for ice cream!
    Good work!

  34. 35 Mari October 13, 2007 at 5:34 pm

I question the validity of Ashley coming here. After all, this is a fat POSITIVE website. It’s funny how you always see thin people coming to our websites and attacking us for having an opinion but you don’t see fat people going to pro-anoxeric websites. Maybe it’s because we have more important things to do than be self-important asses.

Ashley needs to get a clue!

  35. 36 Ashley October 13, 2007 at 7:28 pm

Mari, didn’t I just say in my last comment that the reason I am here is to get a better understanding of everything the “fat acceptance” is about and to have a mature discussion. Yes, I am thin but why does that matter? Am I not allowed to come here and participate just because I am thin? And no, I am NOT attacking anyone at all, please understand that. Oh and yes plenty of fat people go to pro-anna websites.

I won’t even comment on your last statement.

  36. 37 Joy Nash October 13, 2007 at 8:39 pm

    Hi Ashley!
A lot of the questions you have about statistics and the “obesity epidemic” can be answered with Paul Campos’ “The Obesity Epidemic” ..available on amazon, or at your public library. Also Sandy Szwarc at http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/ has a lot of posts that you might find useful. I’m glad you’re here πŸ™‚

  37. 38 Mari October 14, 2007 at 5:42 pm

I don’t know about that, Ashley but I have noticed that
a lot of thin people come to websites like this because
they say they are looking to understand but then you
attack every statement one of us makes, asking us where
we got our “facts” from (which is usually from our bodies)
but then you turn around and make blanket statements such
as “obesity in general is unhealthy.”

Joy did start this website to educate people like yourselves
but also as a place where fat people can vent their frustrations
about living in a thin-oriented society, where blanket statements
such as “obesity in general is unhealthy” is accepted as
fact without even considering an alternative or second opinion.

Thank goodness Joy referred you to Paul Campos. Ashley, if you
really want to learn about fat acceptance, I highly recommend
    you read this book.

Joy, for your next fat rant, could you please do something
on dating. I’m a size 24 and every time I go online to
places like craigslist.org for eligible men, I hear time
after time that I don’t mess up because I “don’t take care
of myself.” FYI: Ashley, today for breakfast, I ate
2 granola bars and a glass of orange juice. For lunch, I ate
a Subway sandwich and the other half I’m going to eat for
    dinner along with a salad.

Joy, a lot of guys presume that I’m not fit even though
like yourself, I exercise at least three times a week for
at least an hour and a half so for your next fat rant,
I’d love it if you do something on dating. I’m tired of
being told that I have a pretty face and that’s it.
On craigslist, the only guys that are interested in
BBW’s are under the casual encounters. Funny, before
this whole obesity epidemic started, in college, I always
had plenty of guys asking me out and now they’re all scared
to. They say its because of looks and yet a ton of them
post ads under casual encounters but if I’m not good enough
to be someone’s girlfriend, I’m not good enough to be
someone’s sex toy either. I’ve talked to other BBW’s and
they are experiencing the same problems.

Why are people so afraid of fat people, especially women?

  38. 39 ashleysguide October 14, 2007 at 6:56 pm

Mari, I’m not attacking anyone at all. How is asking where you get your facts from attacking? I think asking where facts are coming from is nothing but a completely logical question which any normal person in a discussion would ask if they wanted to know more about the subject. I’m sorry took offense to that. And I never said anywhere that ‘obesity in general is unhealthy’. If you think I said that then you must have misunderstood what I said or took it out of context.

I am glad that I have found these blogs. It has taught me a lot about obesity and it has inspired me to start my own blog about body acceptance, weight, and health.

  39. 40 fillyjonk October 15, 2007 at 5:01 pm

I just want to say before people start getting offended by what I say and the questions I’m asking is that I’m not some anti-fat activist or fat-phobe. I’m genuinely concerned and curious about certain areas brought up in this circle of fat acceptance websites.

In other words, a concern troll.

  40. 41 Ashley October 15, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Fillyjonk, is anyone who doesn’t worship the idea of fat acceptance with every fiber of their being a troll to you? Because that is the impression I’m starting to get. This is Joy’s site and she doesn’t seem to think I’m a troll. She understands and doesn’t discriminate against people with questions that just want to learn and have a mature discussion. And I don’t think she would appreciate you coming here with name calling other commenters trying to start a fight, no?

  41. 42 Jon B. October 16, 2007 at 2:23 am

Ashley: I’m not Joy, but some of your statements (Or things similar to) have been heard here more than once, and people may take offense to your tone. I personally didn’t, but the movement has many people that have various backgrounds and experiences.

Firstly: Do not pull the weight card here. I’m thin, and the main reason for that is because of puberty: I haven’t changed my habits much in eight years, and I’ve known about the movement for about six now. I was overweight for some time, but I was also very fit.
This isn’t some tactic aligned to hating a group: Size Acceptance is for all.

    Secondly:
Joy’s statement was that “Fat people do not eat anymore than thin people,” and she takes that comment from the book “Rethiking Thin,” and other sources (Such as “Big Fat Lies”, “The Obesity Myth” and “Big Fat Politics”), which combined have validated the following:
To this day, there are no reputtable studies that have proven that fat people on average eat more than thinner people. It’s been tried, but it hasn’t worked on a large enough scale to be a rule. Joy, and the Fat/Size Acceptance movement believe in the concept that there are people that eat/drink/whatever themselves to the point that they get fatter/thinner/whatever, but it’s not a rule that any group reacts a certain way. In other words: One isn’t always thin because they starve themselves (Or fat because they overeat), and vice versa for the other sitaution.

    Finally:
It’s offensive to some to call this an epidemic because of the following:
1.A lot of the science is based around the assumption of the lifestyle. That lifestyle is what shortens life, but the fat doesn’t have to be external to be a sign of problems: The internal fats don’t make a good anatomical look, and a lot of thin people (Dieters that don’t exercise and the naturally unhealthy living) are at risk as well. Doctors rarely trust a fat/thin person’s word on their lifestyle, because of the picture painted by society. It’s bad because society is being cowardly in blaming a group on all of its problems (Probably because they are seen as defenseless). It’s no different from the assumptions put upon minorities and homosexuals through the mid 1900s: Descriptors are simply being changed.

    2. The numbers are based on BMI, and BMI is highly inaccurate if: One’s bodyfat is not on par with it. That’s technically what it is supposed to be used for: It’s body statistics and sociology that are combined with other sciences to get an outcome. It doesn’t take into account muscle, it doesn’t take into account accumulation area, shape difference, and the biggest of all: Lifestyle differences.
The standards for BMI have also been lowered, and in doing that: It has painted the picture that we gotten gigantic even though we’ve gotten moderately heavier, taller, and we are actually living longer on average.

    3. Our society fuels unhealthiness regardless of weight: All the things are adding up, and for this to be thrown at the face of one group when people of all sizes are being affected is biased, and bland.

    4. Statstically speaking, since 25,000 people are killed by obesity per year (Source: CDC), that means that their are more people killed by being underweight in the USA than the opposite. The underweight recieve flack as well, but which side is getting more?
It’s really not about picking sides, because both instances are vastly overly simplified, overly expressed, and biased to the point that people can pass judgements, and think they are backed by science. I think what I’m trying to say is (And this is my personal view): Obesity is a statistic, however, it’s a highly overstated one just as being underweight is as well. People fail to include factors such as genetics, lifestyle (Because that is diverse on a plane), socioeconmic class (Of both country and person), medication, disease, sleep patterns, stress levels, and more to get a true grasp of things. Basically: “You can’t determine a person’s health by looking at them.”

Fitness is a better barometer of health than BMI: Why do we keep using the latter?
    Good luck with your blog.

    I’ll see what I can do πŸ˜‰

  46. 47 Cindy October 27, 2007 at 1:56 am

    Joy,

I clicked on the video expecting more of the same from the first rant — which I loved. This was fresh, though! You’re a wonderful actress and, if I might say so, you’re my favorite commentator.

    Keep up the good work.

  47. 48 Sapphire October 27, 2007 at 5:07 am

Brilliant! Love it. Hope to see some more.

  48. 49 Roxie November 6, 2007 at 3:58 am

I loved this. I showed it to everyone I knew who had eyes….and some of those who didn’t.

    But just two questions

    1. Where’d you get that killer blue dress?
    2. Who is the Blonde character stroking the television? She never says a word.

  49. 50 Joy Nash November 6, 2007 at 4:59 pm

yay!! I’m glad you liked it! πŸ™‚
The blue dress is INC from Macy’s. and the blonde was a total last minute addition.. πŸ™‚ I’d only planned on the 5 characters, but my director said he needed a sixth- and luckliy I had that blonde wig with me. (There was some debate as to whether Chelsea should be a blonde or a brunette) – so I plopped that on and borrowed that brown top from Abby- my body double- and away we went!

  50. 51 Jenny Barmach November 20, 2007 at 3:49 am

    Hey Joy,
Lindsey told me she saw you and told me about your website. I hope you remember me from USC – Jenny Levy is my maiden name. You are AMAZING! What a wonderful gift you are giving to society. I am SO SO SO proud of you! Thank you for inspiring me. Thank you, thank you. Keep in touch!
